“Another round?” The bartender's voice snapped Clara back to reality. She shook her head, pushing her untouched drink away. The news about Fiona, her "doctor" friend who was actually a lab technician, had left her feeling…lost.

She'd admired Fiona’s dedication, her commitment to helping people. She had believed Fiona was a brilliant, selfless woman. She now felt completely disoriented, as if walking through a funhouse. The reflection in the mirror seemed unfamiliar.

She watched the other patrons, their cheerful chatter grating on her nerves. She felt an overwhelming urge to flee, to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the bar. All the things she thought she knew, the way she viewed the world, felt like they were slipping away. She needed space, a vast expanse of nothingness.
