The sun beat down on Liam's back, a mocking warmth against the icy cold that had settled in his bones. He kicked at a loose stone, sending it skittering across the driveway. The car, his escape, his sanctuary, was gone. He felt a sudden, fierce urge to smash something. The note, clipped beneath the windshield wiper, mocked him with its sterile bureaucratic language.
