The invitation felt heavy in Elara's hand, like a stone she wished she could just drop. Her stomach churned. A knot tightened in her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She'd been looking forward to this, the one night this month dedicated to her, a brief respite from the relentless demands of her life. Now, her best friend's text, a curt "Plans are off," seemed to punch the air out of her.

Her apartment felt colder, the familiar warmth of the afternoon sun suddenly gone. She paced the living room, her steps quick and agitated, the silence amplifying the frantic drumming of her heart. The scent of the roast in the oven, a dish she’d spent hours preparing for the next day, mocked her with its promise of a celebration that wouldn’t happen.

She picked up the phone, her fingers hovering over her friend's number, but the impulse to call was replaced by a wave of something akin to surrender. Instead, she sat, staring at the screen, the weight of the cancelled party settling in her bones.
