The email was a slap in the face. Sarah stared at the words, the vibrant invitation for her anniversary party now replaced with a sterile cancellation notice. Her breath hitched. The carefully chosen venue, the guest list meticulously compiled, the outfit she'd dreamed of wearing - all vanished.

She clicked through pictures of the setting on the venue’s website, the images mocking her now, they reminded her of what was lost. A dizzying wave of nausea washed over her. She gripped the edge of her desk, her knuckles white.

She felt a surge of heat in her face. The phone on her desk seemed to pulse. She couldn't bring herself to respond to the email; the reply box stared back at her blankly.
