Sarah kept her gaze fixed on the flickering TV screen, though she couldn’t tell you what was playing. Her hands, usually restless, lay still in her lap. The soft, rhythmic click of keys from the study echoed through the otherwise silent apartment. It was late, almost midnight, and Mark had been in there for hours.

A faint giggle, a sound Sarah barely recognized from the man she knew, drifted into the living room. Her stomach twisted, an uncomfortable knot tightening its grip. She took a deep, shaky breath, her fingertips suddenly icy.

She stood and made her way towards the study, her steps hesitant. The door was slightly ajar, and she peered in. Mark was hunched over his laptop, a textbook open beside him. He muttered something in a language she didn’t understand, then laughed again, this time a deeper, more intimate sound.
