The takeout container felt heavy in Leo's hands, heavier than the usual Friday night burden. He clutched it like a lifeline, the smell of garlic and basil doing little to soothe the knot tightening in his stomach. He kicked a loose pebble across the cracked pavement, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet of the street. He’d walked the familiar route, anticipation bubbling, only to see the stark white sign: “Closed Permanently.” His breath hitched.

He unlocked his apartment door, the click sounding unusually loud in the stillness. He usually rushed in, eager to devour the comforting lasagna.
