The vibrant colors of the restaurant, usually so cheerful, seemed muted, the music now a hollow echo. Amelia stood frozen at the entrance, the air suddenly thick, difficult to breathe. She hadn't expected to be so affected.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if the world was tilting on its axis. She pushed the glass door open, the sound of the bell a sharp, unwelcome intrusion. The familiar faces of the staff, usually so welcoming, seemed distant, their smiles forced. She mumbled a barely audible greeting, then turned and walked away.
