The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Sarah's throat as she hauled herself up the pull-down stairs. Each step creaked a protest, echoing the gnawing anxiety that had been her constant companion for weeks. She'd sunk all her savings into this house, a fixer-upper, hoping for a fresh start. Now, the peeling paint and leaky roof felt less like charming imperfections and more like a looming debt.

Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating a jumble of forgotten things. Sarah squinted, her stomach twisting. There, in a corner, sat a child’s rocking horse, its painted eyes blank and vacant. She felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of unease.

She began to rifle through a trunk, her fingers trembling slightly. Inside, she found a collection of old photographs, faces staring back at her, their smiles unfamiliar, their lives a mystery. A headache throbbed behind her eyes. Why had they left these things?
