The coffee shop buzzed with Saturday morning chatter, a stark contrast to the quiet unease that had settled over David. He'd arranged to meet Jessica, his girlfriend of six months. As he sat, waiting, he spotted her from across the room. He was about to wave when he saw her embrace another man, a man he recognized as the 'friend' she'd mentioned on numerous occasions. He felt his face flush hot, then ice cold.

He watched, frozen, as they sat down at a table, their heads bent close in intimate conversation. The world narrowed, focusing on the small scene playing out before him. The cheerful cafe sounds now grated on his ears. He wanted to get up and confront them, yet felt glued to his chair.
