He paced the length of the small apartment, the worn wooden floorboards groaning under his weight. Sunlight, a cruel reminder of the day’s relentless passage, streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The package, a small, unassuming brown paper parcel, sat on the mantelpiece, untouched. It was for "Ms. Eleanor Vance," the previous resident. He knew the name; he’d seen it scrawled on the back of a faded photograph he’d found tucked away in a drawer.

He stopped pacing and rubbed the back of his neck, a familiar tension knotting his muscles. He should just leave it, return it to sender, but a morbid curiosity held him. A dull ache throbbed behind his eyes, a constant companion. He glanced at the parcel again, his hands clenching into fists at his sides.

Finally, he grabbed the parcel, the paper crinkling under his touch. His fingers fumbled with the string. Inside, he found a neatly folded letter. The handwriting was elegant, feminine. He felt a wave of despair wash over him. He knew he shouldn't read it. He shouldn’t. But he opened it anyway.
