Gemotions

The box sat on the counter, a gaudy, bright yellow, a stark contrast to the muted tones of the kitchen. Inside it read, "To the new owner of 34 Oak Street, with warm wishes, I hope you find happiness here." It was addressed to "Mr. Harold Davies", the owner from 20 years ago. Daniel, the current tenant, felt a sharp stab of irritation and guilt. He'd never even bothered to look up the previous tenant's name.

He’d found the house a mess, and everything about it still felt that way. He picked up the box cutter. He'd been hoping to change that with the day of organizing he'd planned. But now? He wasn't sure. He sliced the tape.

Inside were a collection of old photographs and a journal. Daniel opened the journal. The first entry was dated the day Harold moved in: "I've started a new chapter." It was a fresh start. Daniel tossed the journal and photos into the recycling bin. He was done with fresh starts. He was tired.
