"Don't you think it's a bit of an overreaction?" Mark's girlfriend, Sarah, asked, trying to sound casual, but her voice betrayed her concern. Mark just stared out the car window, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. He ignored her questions.

He had spent weeks avoiding the subject, putting off the inevitable. He should have come sooner. Now, it was just a pile of rubble and a vacant lot. He felt a churning in his stomach, a deep ache.

He hadn't been back in years, but the demolition had stirred up feelings he thought were long gone. He focused on the distant hills, trying to force the painful images from his mind. He wanted to forget the past, but the past, he now realised, would not let him go.
