Sarah stared at the glowing screen, the email confirming the patent denial. The words swam before her eyes. Her self-cleaning clothing line, her clever invention for reducing waste, was already claimed by a rival company.

She sat motionless, her body a statue. The noise of the city, the chirping of birds, and the general clamor of the neighborhood all became distant echoes. She had no energy for them.

She felt a crushing sense of inadequacy, a deep, pervasive sadness. Her breath hitched. The dream, the vision she held so dearly, had been ripped from her grasp. She was now just adrift, without a rudder.
