She slammed the door of their shared bedroom, the sound echoing through the small apartment. The weight in her chest was immense. Maya ran a hand through her hair, yanking at the strands. She couldn't believe David, of all people, was so resistant. A small, fluffy kitten; what could be so bad?

Her eyes stung. He didn't even *try* to understand her longing for companionship. She felt a profound sense of isolation. Work was draining, her friends were busy, and the silence of the apartment felt suffocating.
