The apartment felt too big, the silence too loud. She stood by the window, the city lights twinkling outside like distant, unreachable stars. It was still unbelievable. She had bumped into him at the grocery store, after decades of separation. The man she had adored as a child simply did not remember her.

She moved away from the window, and wandered into the kitchen, reaching for the bottle of water on the counter. The water remained untouched. She sank onto a stool, staring into space. The world spun.
