The invitation felt heavy in Elara's hand, like a brick. She stared at it, the embossed script mocking her. "A Celebration of Margaret and Thomas' Retirement." The words swam before her eyes. She hadn't spoken to her mother in weeks, not since the argument about… well, everything. Now, here she was, asked to give a speech. She crumpled the paper, then smoothed it out, a nervous habit she'd inherited from her father. Her stomach churned, a cold knot forming in her gut. She pictured her mother's knowing smile, the way she'd dissect Elara’s every word.

The party was held in the stuffy community hall, smelling of stale air and floral arrangements. Elara felt everyone's gaze on her as she approached the podium, a small mountain of unease. Her throat constricted, making it hard to breathe.

“So,” she began, her voice a strained whisper, “Mum… Dad… Retirement.” She trailed off, acutely aware of the silence that followed. The script she'd spent hours crafting seemed to evaporate from her mind.
