The silence that followed the company-wide announcement was more deafening than any noise. Sarah stared blankly at the words on the screen: *Merger with Zenith Technologies*. The familiar click of the mouse faded into an irritating background sound. Her stomach churned.

She hadn't realized how much of her identity was tied to this place, this job. She felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of loss, a void where her sense of purpose used to be. A chill ran down her spine.

She absently rubbed her arms, as if trying to ward off the cold. She felt utterly alone.
