He stared at the reflection in the kitchen window, barely recognizing himself. His shoulders were slumped, his posture defeated. He had spent the entire afternoon building up his courage to text his daughter and apologize. But instead, it landed with her stepmother, a woman with whom he'd never seen eye-to-eye.

He rubbed a hand over his face. He felt his throat tighten, the familiar ache of regret settling in his chest. His fingers itched with the urge to correct the mistake, to take back the words.
