The silence felt thick, suffocating. It was worse than the arguments. Sarah just sat there, and her silence was heavy, like a physical presence. The unspoken words hung in the air, a constant reminder of the fight they'd had earlier. Her coworker, John, was whistling tunelessly.

She stared at the floor. The carpet was worn, stained. It was nothing like the apartment that he had just left. The thought made her feel empty. Her jaw ached. She'd been grinding her teeth.
