"Professor Davies is leaving?" Sarah repeated, her voice barely a whisper. The news, delivered in a bland, impersonal email, had knocked the wind out of her. It felt as if someone had just yanked the rug out from under her feet. Her stomach lurched.

She had spent months, even years, working alongside Davies. They had shared coffee, late nights in the lab, and countless triumphs and setbacks. The professor’s support had been unwavering, his belief in her work the engine that drove her. Now, that support was disappearing. She gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles whitening.

That night, sleep evaded her. Every time she closed her eyes, she envisioned the lab, the tools, the unfinished experiments. The silence in her room was oppressive, a suffocating blanket. The future, once so clear, now shimmered, blurry and uncertain.
