The antique clock ticked with a maddening persistence, each second a hammer blow against Leo’s frayed nerves. He hadn’t touched it in months, the intricate gears and delicate hands a painful reminder of lost time. He used to spend hours in his workshop, captivated by horology, but his son, Finn, had taken over. Now, the workshop belonged to Finn, filled with the boy's enthusiastic chatter and the rhythmic whir of his own, less-than-expert repairs. Leo couldn't bring himself to enter it anymore. He glanced at the photograph on the mantelpiece – Finn, beaming, holding a pocket watch he'd meticulously restored. Leo felt a pang, a sharp sting. He'd poured his heart into that hobby, built a sanctuary in the workshop. Now, it was just…gone, replaced by a reflection of his own forgotten passion.

The phone rang, and he flinched. Finn's excited voice filled the receiver, describing some new modification he'd made. Leo forced a smile, his voice thin as he offered a lukewarm word of praise. He needed to find a way to navigate this. He really did.
