The scent of darkroom chemicals, once a source of comfort, now filled the apartment with a bitter tang. Her darkroom was now her son, Liam's, domain. Photography, her long-held love, had been seized with the boy’s relentless zeal.

Clara stood in the living room, watching the sun dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the floor. The shadows felt heavy. She felt an echo of frustration, a feeling of being utterly displaced.

She gazed at the pictures Liam had taken, portraits and landscapes, all with an expertise she never possessed at his age. She didn't want this.
