The heat in the car was stifling, the highway stretching out before her like a ribbon of despair. She kept the windows rolled up, the silence amplifying the thrumming in her ears. He was gone, finally, that was the hardest thing of all.

She should have been at his going away party, but she couldn’t bear the thought of seeing him, of hearing the well-wishes, of watching him embrace his new life while hers seemed to stand still. She wanted to yell and cry.

She gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned white. The landscape blurred. She knew, deep down, that she was being unfair, that this wasn’t about her. But right now, that awareness offered no comfort, no solace.
