Gemotions

The sunlight felt harsh on Leo’s face as he surveyed the barren spot. He blinked, fighting back a wave of heat that threatened to engulf him. He'd envisioned the old pine, the one he and his father planted, as a symbol of growth, of lasting connection. Now, it was gone, a casualty of progress, or perhaps just carelessness. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

He crossed his arms, the familiar gesture of self-protection. His gaze drifted to the neighbor's house. Had they seen? Did they care? He felt a prickling sensation behind his eyes, a desperate desire to simply disappear. The air seemed thin, as if he couldn't get enough to breathe.
