The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the yard, making the absence of the apple tree even more pronounced. David ran a hand through his hair, the gesture more frantic than usual. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to run, to escape the sight of the barren patch of dirt. He was overwhelmed.

He remembered the sweet scent of the blossoms, the weight of the apples in his hands. He kicked at a loose stone, sending it skittering across the dry grass. His jaw clenched.

He spun on his heel and walked towards his car. Without a word to anyone, he started the engine. The sound was a harsh contrast to the silence he'd sought here.
