"What the hell is this?" Ben slammed the letter down on the kitchen table. His sister, Sarah, across from him, flinched. The lawyer's words echoed in his mind: "…a substantial sum of money… subject to… providing care for a specific beneficiary." The beneficiary? Their eccentric Aunt Mildred, whom they both despised. He'd envisioned a comfortable nest egg, a way out of his dead-end job. Sarah, he suspected, had received something more lucrative.

He paced the kitchen, the linoleum cold beneath his bare feet. The apartment felt too small, the walls closing in. He glared at the phone, tempted to call Sarah, but the thought was repulsive. He didn't want to show his hand.

He drove out to Mildred's cottage, a sense of dread pooling in his chest. The place was a disaster, a monument to hoarding and neglect. The moment he stepped inside, Aunt Mildred grabbed his arm, her eyes glinting. She started babbling about her hidden treasures. He felt a deep, profound weariness. His inheritance, it seemed, came with a considerable price tag – both emotional and practical.
