Liam was pacing. Back and forth, across the cramped confines of his dorm room. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum with an oppressive energy. The announcement, delivered during his history lecture, had been a bombshell. His hands, usually steady, were now clasped tightly behind his back. He kept muttering under his breath, repeating the university’s name, as if saying it might somehow change the reality.

He stopped, abruptly, and kicked a stray textbook across the room. The thud echoed in the sudden silence. He went over to the window, the cold glass a stark contrast to his heated skin. The campus, usually buzzing with activity, appeared different today. Quiet. Lonely. He felt utterly adrift, a small boat on a vast and unforgiving ocean.

He pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts. He hesitated before reaching his parents. How could he break the news? He needed to talk to someone, but the words felt like lead in his throat. He slumped onto his bed, burying his face in his hands, and breathed deeply, trying to calm the racing thud in his chest.
