Rain hammered the kitchen window, mirroring the percussion in Amelia’s chest. The neighbor's knock, a tentative rapping on the back door, had jolted her. She took a breath, smoothed her damp hands on her jeans, and swung the door open. Mr. Henderson, his face etched with a familiar discomfort, gestured toward the ancient oak straddling the property line. “Think it’s getting a bit… precarious,” he stammered, avoiding her gaze. Amelia’s knuckles whitened around the doorframe. The oak was a sentinel, a silent witness to decades of her life.
