The doorbell rang, a shrill, unwelcome sound. David almost didn’t answer. He’d been lost in the labyrinth of his own thoughts, the silence of his apartment broken only by the rhythmic hum of the refrigerator. He opened the door to find a delivery person holding a vase overflowing with deep purple orchids. No card.

He let the flowers sit on the counter. His appetite was completely gone. He hadn’t eaten anything all day. They represented some unknown, yet significant, element in his life. He found himself picking at the petals, tearing them one by one.
