The lilies were almost overwhelmingly fragrant, a sweet, cloying scent that made her head ache. He felt like he was suffocating. He’d spent the morning staring at the television, the screen providing no escape. They were a symbol of something unknown.

He wanted to throw them away, but something kept him rooted in place. He ran a hand across his forehead, and felt a cold sweat. He felt as though the walls were closing in, the silence of the apartment suffocating him. He was losing control.
