The phone call had ended, leaving Alex with a cold, hollow feeling in their gut. The building was going condo. They stared at the swirling colors on the television, the noise a meaningless distraction.

They hadn't thought about leaving. It was the only place they'd felt safe. The idea of uprooting, of starting over, of facing the unknown, was paralyzing. Their palms started to sweat.

They walked over to their window, gazing at the city lights. Their vision blurred, and they felt a prickling sensation behind their eyes. They pressed their forehead against the cool glass, desperate for some solace.
