Gemotions

The clinking of the tea cups seemed overly loud in the sudden silence. Sarah’s mother had just finished speaking, her voice calm and measured as she announced her decision. Sarah felt a prickle, a strange heat, starting in her chest and spreading down her arms. She fiddled with the napkin in her lap, smoothing and folding it, then smoothing it again. Her smile felt fixed, unnatural, as she met her mother’s expectant gaze.

“Well, that’s… quite a change,” she managed, her voice lighter than she intended. She cleared her throat, suddenly aware of the air conditioning humming in the background. She wondered if she should offer more tea.

The church bells, usually a comforting backdrop to Sunday afternoons, now felt like an accusatory chime. Her father, usually jovial, remained uncharacteristically quiet, staring at the tablecloth. Sarah excused herself, claiming a sudden headache, and retreated to the guest room.
