“They’re digging something,” Clara muttered, staring out the window. Her voice was barely a whisper. She’d spent the morning watching the construction crew, their movements making her feel on edge. She hadn’t felt this way in a long time. They were digging a hole, a large one, near the side of the house.

She kept the blinds closed during the day and kept checking the security system, something she never worried about. She felt a growing, visceral dread, a feeling that something was irrevocably changing. She couldn't shake the sensation of being watched. She began avoiding her front porch, which was something she loved to sit on.
