The old house felt different today. It was always a haven. But today, the creaks of the floorboards, the settling of the roof, the quiet hum of the refrigerator seemed to amplify a certain tension in the air. The silence was deafening. Alex sat in his usual chair, the sunlight casting long shadows across the room.

He’d spent the last few weeks working on the application, pouring his heart and soul into every sentence. The thought of all that effort, of that hope, being for naught, left a bitter taste in his mouth. He picked at the corner of his book.

He looked at the computer, and the email. He steeled himself and clicked on it.
