The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a discordant tune, amplifying the tremor in Leo’s hands. He smoothed down his tie, a futile gesture he’d repeated a dozen times since Mr. Henderson, his boss, had dropped the bomb: “You’ll be training your replacement, Leo.” Now, a young woman named Sarah was perched opposite him, her notepad open, a smile plastered across her face that felt brittle and artificial to Leo.

He gestured towards the computer screen, the presentation he’d spent weeks perfecting now feeling like a burden. “So, right here, you’ll want to input the… the client data.” His voice cracked slightly, the words catching in his throat. He cleared it and continued, but each sentence felt like a step further down a precipice.

Every click of the mouse, every explanation, felt like a confession. Leo couldn't shake the image of himself, weeks from now, being the one replaced. The very air seemed to thicken with a pressure he could barely withstand.
