The referee blew the whistle, and Maria knew her days as the team's point guard were over. The coach had decided to move her to the center position. The move was meant to shore up the team's defense, but she was finding herself with a knot in her stomach.

She stepped out onto the court, the weight of a new role settling onto her shoulders. Instead of orchestrating the offense, she was now responsible for rebounding and post defense. Every time she reached for a rebound, her fingers felt numb. She preferred to watch the ball from a distance.
