A tremor ran through Amelia’s hands as she held the document. The print on the paper blurred. She kept blinking, trying to clear her vision. The professor’s words echoed in her mind, sharp and accusing. She kept going over her research notes, looking for something she might have missed, some citation she'd overlooked. Her breath hitched in her chest.

She stood abruptly, pacing the small apartment. The worn rug under her feet felt unfamiliar, uneven. Her thoughts tangled like threads of yarn, making her head spin. She wanted to scream, to lash out at someone, anyone.
