"Good luck," Chloe said, forcing a smile as she watched Ethan walk into the interview room. The words felt hollow, a practiced performance masking the turmoil inside. She remained outside, alone in the hall.

Her legs were restless, pacing back and forth, the cold tile pressing through her shoes. The air conditioning was on full blast, yet she felt a rising heat in her chest. Every minute felt like an eternity.

She recalled the numerous times they'd collaborated on projects, the easy camaraderie they'd shared. The thought of potentially losing that was a tight vise around her heart. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was witnessing the closing of a door.
