I noticed the subtle changes in Liam. The new car, the designer clothes, the constant talk of "complex financial instruments." He'd been working at a "leading investment firm," he said. My stomach churned. He used to be so open, so…normal.

He'd become guarded, deflecting my questions about his work with a tight smile. He wouldn't show me the office, and when I looked up the firm, it was nothing like he described. The more I found out, the more disconnected I felt.

I went back to our old haunts, the places we shared stories and dreams. It was like I was standing in a ghost town. My throat closed, a knot of confusion and sorrow constricting my breath.
