He told himself it was just the dust. His eyes were watering, and his nose was itching, but the feeling in his gut was something else entirely. He'd found a child's bedroom set in the far corner of the attic, complete with a tiny bed and a rocking chair. It looked… disturbingly new.

The lightbulb flickered, casting the room into momentary darkness, and he flinched. He swore he heard a faint whisper, just at the edge of his hearing, but when he turned, the attic was silent.

He noticed a small, wooden carving of a bird perched on the windowsill. The bird's eyes seemed to follow him. He took a step back, heart racing, and suddenly he felt like he had to get out of the attic, right now.
