The vibrant colors of the birthday card clashed with the mundane grey of the mailbox. It was a stark juxtaposition that sent a peculiar chill down Martha’s spine. She was usually so careful. The card felt like a glaring error in her usually controlled existence. Her fingers tightened around the envelope, the edges digging into her palm.

She backed away from the mailbox, her gaze darting around the street. Everything seemed… heightened. The distant sounds of traffic, the rustling of leaves in the trees, even the chirping of birds – it all felt amplified. She hurried back inside, her heart thudding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She went directly to her bedroom, shutting and locking the door. She didn’t know what she was afraid of, exactly, but she knew she didn’t want to be found.
