The newly-painted walls of the dining room had a sharp, sterile scent that filled the air. Leo was supposed to be measuring for new curtains, but his mind kept wandering. He was distracted by the strange, recessed panel behind the ornate fireplace. The house, a sprawling Tudor with a history, had a certain weight to it.

He tapped the panel tentatively. It sounded hollow. He ran his hand along the smooth surface, searching for a seam, a catch, anything. Then, with a soft click, it swung inward, revealing a small, dark space. His heart leaped in his chest.

The narrow room was empty. Empty except for a single, tarnished silver locket resting on a small, wooden pedestal. He didn't want to touch it, yet his fingers instinctively reached out. The silence was deafening, broken only by the rapid thrum of his own heartbeat.
