Gemotions

"This is ridiculous," Clara muttered, forcing a smile at her reflection in the mirror. She'd found the wallet on the beach, washed up near the tide line. The bills were soaked but salvageable. The sheer amount of money had her in a fluster.

She kept checking the windows, as if expecting someone to appear. Her breaths came in shallow gasps. She paced the length of her small flat, the wooden floorboards creaking under her hurried steps. The reflection in the mirror showed a face she hardly recognized, pale and strained.

She picked up the phone again, then dropped it. She couldn't bring herself to call the police, to relinquish her claim. Her whole body felt like it was buzzing, full of energy she didn't know how to release.
