"The Golden Gate Cake," the menu announced, a picture perfectly replicating his Aunt Susan's creation. James felt a tremor run through him. His palms began to sweat.

He had grown up watching his aunt create that cake every year for his birthday. The intricate layers, the perfect frosting, the taste he could conjure on his tongue. To see it under another name filled him with a potent emotion he couldn’t place.

He felt a burning sensation in his chest. His heart hammered against his ribs. He felt a deep sense of wrongness, as if something precious had been stolen. He wanted to go home, yet he could not move.
