The doctor’s words echoed in Leo's head, each syllable a hammer blow. "There's a discrepancy, Leo," she had said, her voice gentle but firm. "Based on your DNA, there seems to be a different birth parent listed on your birth certificate." He felt a wash of nausea.

He gripped the armrests of the chair until his knuckles were white. The familiar landscape of his life seemed to shift beneath him. He looked at his hands, hands that had always felt like his own, but now felt like someone else's.

He abruptly stood up and began to pace the small examining room, as if trying to outrun the truth. He felt the impulse to scream, to lash out. He wanted answers, but the questions felt too big, too complex to even formulate.
