The sleek, modern kitchen, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt sterile and cold to Sofia. The gleaming countertops, the minimalist design, only emphasized the hollowness in her chest. The DNA results, which confirmed an adoption she'd never known about, sat open on the island, mocking her.

She poured herself a glass of water, her hand shaking. The water sloshed over the rim, spilling onto the counter, and she didn’t bother to wipe it up. Her usual meticulousness had abandoned her. She felt unmoored, like she was floating in a vast, empty sea.

She stared out the window, at the familiar cityscape, but it all looked foreign, as if she were viewing it through a distorting lens. She felt an overwhelming impulse to disappear, to vanish into the anonymity of the city.
