"Did you... did you see the email?" Clara's voice was barely a whisper. She stared at David across the small kitchen table, her eyes wide with a strange mix of fear and disbelief. Her hands fluttered near her chest.

David nodded, his jaw tight. He pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear, but his touch offered no comfort. The document was an unmistakable indicator of their lost fortunes.

She got up and walked to the window, staring at the street below. She ran a hand across the window, but the glass was cold. The world suddenly felt distant, and all the promise they had held seemed to evaporate.
