The familiar scent of ink and paper usually calmed Victor. But this afternoon, the stacks of blueprints and notebooks felt like an indictment. He kept re-reading the confirmation of patent infringement. It was a cold slap in the face.

He slumped back in his chair, the leather squeaking beneath him. His shoulders sagged, his energy gone. The feeling of utter defeat was heavy in the air.

He picked up a pen and started to doodle on a notepad, mindless lines and shapes filling the page. His mind was a blank canvas of frustration, a landscape of lost potential.
