Liam stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. A wave of nausea washed over him, making his vision swim. The accusations, the damning evidence… his hero, Marcus Thorne, exposed. He sat frozen in his chair, a coldness spreading from his core. He reached for his water glass, but his hand trembled, and he spilled the water. He didn't bother to wipe it up.

He closed his eyes, replaying the scene in his mind—the book launch, the standing ovation, the praise he had heaped upon Thorne. Everything felt tainted, as if he’d been tricked. He began to breathe shallowly, each breath a struggle. His chest constricted.

He got up and went to the window, staring out at the cityscape. He felt a sharp jab of resentment. The city lights seemed to mock him. He wanted to scream, to dismantle something, to escape the sickening feeling in his gut.
