The air in the house suddenly felt stifling. He’d been trying to convince himself that it was nothing, a misunderstanding, but the evidence was undeniable. His daughter, Olivia, had created this persona, and now he felt like he was walking through a minefield of potential secrets. He kept looking at the closed door of Olivia's room, not wanting to disturb it.

He picked up a book and opened it to a random page, but the words blurred before his eyes. He put the book down, then walked over to the front window. The neighbors were outside, laughing. He watched them for an extended period of time, then went back to the living room.
